Trip and I have decided that we need to go ahead and start pickling this weekend. Our cucumber plants have really started producing recently. We have 4 cukes in the fridge, and picked another 4 today with a 5th out on the vine we decided to let chill until tomorrow. I am so excited to have homemade pickles, they are so yummy!! I just need to get jars and lids, and dill for me. Trip wants to make a sweet chunk pickle recipe from back in his family but we need some clarification from his mom first. That recipe is way more complicated!
We also decided today that we mislabeled our tomato plants - reversing what we thought was the Pink Brandywine and the Mr. Stripey. This means that we ate a Mr. Stripey tomato tonight, and that plant is well on it's way out the door. The fruit was no where near as pretty as I thought it would be (yellow with clearly defined red stripes) but it was yummy. A sweeter tomato than others I've had, but good flavor. This also means that the Pink Brandywine was the LAST to produce fruit, and while the plant looks super healthy, it only has 3 almost fully matured fruits and no sign of more fruits to come. It's still flowering so we'll see.
Unfortunately we've discovered that we're going to need to use an herbicide spray this weekend. We have some catipillars that want to decimate our plants. Trip assures me that he knows what is safe, and given the amount of training he has I will trust him.
But, to end with some good news, we have a few watermelon fruits already starting to form. Hopefully we can get those ripe too. Yum, Yum!
