Community Supported Agriculture

I've been meaning to blog about this for a while now, but just haven't sat down to do it until today. A couple of weekends ago, there was a newspaper article in the Sunday version of The State talking about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms in our area. I am so excited to know that this is an option for us here in South Carolina and hope to take advantage of it soon! Maybe even this fall.
What is CSA you ask? CSA Farms operate by having individuals/groups/etc in the community buy shares of the crops each season. Then, once the crops are ready, they're divvied up between all of the share-holders to enjoy. So, essentially people pre-purchase their fresh (and normally organic) veggies for the season. I've known about the theory behind CSA for a while, as my brother and his wife share a "box" from a farm in Massachusetts, but didn't know of any farms around here. It's pretty neat, each week there is a box full of fresh veggies and/or fruits delivered to a drop off site near you. The article in The State explained that in South Carolina there are normally two 12-13 week seasons; one for spring/summer and the other for late summer/fall crops.
Even though Trip and I have our own small garden this year, I would really love to try a CSA out too! I need someone to share with though! Even with one of the small boxes I know we'd probably get too much to eat in one week. Plus I would have to find time to search new veggie recipes! There would definitely be some things I haven't made before....
